This paper elaborates I.A.Richards' concept of metaphor,the function of metophor and the functioning mechanism of metophor,and explores I.A.Richards' contribution to metaphor study.Metophor is not only a rhetorical device creating the effects of style,but also a way of human thinking,a method of helping people's understanding.Fundametally,all languages are metophorical.And metophors functions by means of Abstraction.The Abstract process of forming a metophors is that of referential meanings are linked with other referential meanings by referring to some features.
