The Volcano Lover,a novel imbued with Susan Sontag's passion after her long silence in fiction writing, initiates a general concern with women issues in her late works.Although the title refers to the male character in the novel, the main focus is on the women who live as 'the Other' under male domination.Among them,Catherine identifies herself with 'the Other,' willingly enduring her disastrous life;Emma is condemned as an evil spirit that ruins honorable men;Fonseca is sentenced to death as she transgresses her gender role by interfering in social affairs.Relying upon the traditional narration of the historical romance,Sontag brings innovation to the genre by giving voice to the silenced women in the last chapter.Speaking posthumously, those women argue for their right to exist.Examining the current status of women in the form of an 18th-century story,Sontag suggests that it is hard for women to enjoy real freedom and shake off the otherness ascribed to them.
