摘要
Recognizing increasing pressures are being exerted to reduce the costs of emergency medical care and that pain in the chest is “high-volume, high-risk, and high-liability”symptom, the editors and contributors to this book thoroughly explore the development of special chest pain units. The need for special chest pain units is established by the 8% of all emergency department visits for chest pain. Now, the basis for the single highest malpractice awards against emergency room physician results from patients who visited the emergency facility with pain in the chest. The contributors to this excellent newbook emphasize that discharge home in the throes of unsuspected myocardial infarction results in 30% greater mortality than is properly treated.
