说“还(還)”——兼析从“睘/瞏”得声字的音义同源关系

On the Chinese Character Huan With a brief analysis of the cognate relationship between sound and meaning of the Chinese characters derived from Huan

对于古代汉语中经常出现的"还(還)走"这个词语,绝大多数人都认为"还(還)"与"旋"为通假的关系。然而,这样一来,却又与通假字读音相近同、意义无关涉的定义相矛盾。笔者认为:从"睘/瞏"得声的字具有音义同源的关系,"还(還)"字本身就具有"回转"、"掉转"、"转身"这样的意义,认定"还(還)"与"旋"为通假的关系,不仅模糊了"还(還)"字的音义演化轨迹,而且为学习者无端增加了难度,制造了麻烦。

A great majority of scholars believe that the Chinese character Huan Zou,often ap peared in classical Chinese language,can be interchanged with the character Xuan.Howev- er,if so,it is similar in pronunciation to those interchangeable characters but contradictable with their meaning.This paper assumes that in terms of its cognate relationship between pronunciation and meaning of the characters derived from Huan,the character Huan itself bears the meanings,turning around,turning back,and turning on one's heels.The as- sumption that Huan is interchangeable with Xuan will not only obscure the evolutional process of Huan in both its pronunciation and meaning,but also bring more difficulty to the learners of Chinese Language.
