The deictic zhe and na themselves don't have fixed meaning.Their meanings vary from different referents.The comprehension of their referents depends on the situational context and mutual knowledge between the addresser and the addressee.In text,these situational contexts expounded in narration can help ascertain what zhe and na refer to.Through the in- vestigation of one million words in modern Chinese,this paper attempts to discuss the princi ples of gestural usage of zhe,na in denoting'object','person'and'location'.
