Based on a clarification of the concept 'intellectual',this paper interrogates the commonly held view that Alexander Solzhenitsyn is 'the conscience of the intellectual'.It argues that Solzhenitsyn's life attitude and cultural stance are far from static and unchanging.A look at how Solzhenitsyn has been endowed with 'the conscience of the intellectual' will help us reflect upon ourselves and our culture.
