Both Donald Barthelme and his brother Frederick Barthelme seek to give a fictional representation of contemporary America, but each in his own way. This paper, taking as cases for analyzing their representative works Snow White and Moon Deluxe, aims at a discussion of three related questions: 1,what influences conceptual art prevailing in America, especially abstract expressionism, has exerted on Barthelme brothers;2,how do the ideas from experimental art take shape in the fictional practice of the brothers;and 3,what common ground do they hold beneath their radically different ways of representation. The paper argues that the Barthelmes represent some interesting change in the period spanning from 1960s to 1980s in postmodern American literature, yet they have similarly drawn an ugly picture of the postmodern American society.
