摘要
When Timothy A.Ross translated into English the short story Days for Watching the Sea by Huang Chu’un-ming, an influential Taiwan Residents writer in the 1970s, he gave the story a new name:A Flower in the Rainy Night.By using a flower to symbolize the heroine Pai-mei, this title reveals more clearly the misery Pai-mei suffers and the struggle she puts up against her fate. From a flower in the rainy night to a flower having a place in the garden, Pai-mei saves herself in the only way possible to her-giving birth to a child. When her profession deprives her of the dignity as a woman, she wins back people’s respect by becoming a mother. My paper is a textural analysis on how the symbols of flowers are used in the short story and how Pai-mei’s salvation is accomplished.
