Techniques for English Translation of Chinese Idioms

在英译的过程中,要想忠实地传达汉语习语的含义同时又体现汉语言文化特色,必须对习语进行灵活适当的处理。除了常用的直译、意译和套译等方法外,有时必须对原文进行更加复杂的处理,常用的方法包括意译直译兼用、变体习语的应用、节译法和增译法。

The employment of some special translation techniques is necessary in order to convey the linguistic and cultural characteristics as well as the meaning of Chinese idioms when they are translated into English. According to different situations,the translator may combine the methods of literal translation and liberal translation to translate a single Chinese idiom,or adapt an English idiom for the translation or make some deletion and addition.
