This paper mainly analyzes the Yi poet Aku Wuwu's view on American Indian civilization as shown in his poetry collection 'The Appeal of the Mississippi River'. It firstly discusses how animism, the fundamental religious belief of American Indians, is reflected in Aku's poetry. Then, it analyzes Aku's understanding of the causes for the decline of Indian civilization: the love of benefaction, loose organization, and self-blockade. The poet realizes the poetic justice though there might exist some misunderstanding of American Indian history. The paper further analyzes the poet's strategies for the revival of Indian civilization: self-regulation in accordance with historical trend, and preservation of tradition in its development. At last, the paper makes comments on the poet's view of being 'equal though different'. The whole collection is prevailed with humane concern, cosmopolitanism, and philanthropism. The poet is more broad-minded and calmer in the new poetry collection than in his former works.
