Helen,the heroine of The Tenant of Wildfield Hall,was forced to leave her atrocious husband with her son to claim her right to an independent existence.In the middle of 19th century,wives and children were wholly subjected to the husband's control.The novel not only shocked the social conventions.but flouted the laws of En- gland of that time,which expressed the strongest thoughts of equality between men and women.It might be said to be “the first manifesto for Women's Lib”.
