Indeterminacy in Literary Criticism

在当代西方文学批评中 ,意义不确定论曾经一度引人注意而又令人迷惑。本文对解构主义的意义不确定论从语言文字难以名状和自相矛盾的特点、从文学作品上下文可能不确定的特点 ,分析了文学批评意义不确定的可能性。

This paper intends to discuss the question of the “indeterminacy” in literary criticism. “In determinacy” is a rather attractive feature in the theory of deconstruction. It has also aroused confusion nowadays, especially in the literary studies, because it goes opposite to the traditional way of looking at things in criticism. Traditionally, readers usually tend to get the main idea of a text in their reading. But the deconstruction theory prefers to let us see the multiple and contradicted meanings in a text, because the deconstruction theory insists that the meaning of word cannot be determined according to its own nature. Since literature is a construction of words, the meaning of a text cannot be determined. Further more, the context in a work of art is very complicated, for it is related to both author and reader, so, literary criticism nowadays tends to find out questions and inconsistencies instead of giving a satisfied idea. Although the theory of indetermination is logical and scientific, it also leads to some problems in the field of literary sturdy. Being aware of the multiple meanings of a text, the author of this paper insists that we tell clearly as much as possible the meaning of a literary text.
