Since independence,politicalsituation in Nigeria has w itnessed prolonged restlessness,a product ofthe British policy in the pastas w ellas the com plex contradictions and tense rela tions am ong the various ethnic groups,religions and regions w ithin the country.The head of the eighth m ilitary governm entAbubakar prom ised thatthe governm entw ould hand overthe state pow er as schedule and realize civilian rule.Judging by the politicalcareer ofthe Presi dent elect Obasanjo,his personal popularity at hom e and abroad as w ell as the policy and lines he isprepared to adopt,there is hope thatsituationsin Nigeria w illtend to be stable.In econom ic fields,itis expected thatNigeria w illreview and reform ulate law s and regulations, encourage investm entby foreign firm s and private capital,m ake greatefforts to develop food production,and prom ote econom ic diversification.In m id March ofthe year,Obasanjo began to m ake globaldiplom atic visits for im proving Nigeria’s internationalim age,and the country is gradually extricating itself from diplom atic isolation.Thus,Nigeria is undergoing new changes politically,econom ically and in foreign relations,the new civilian governm ent,how ever,has to shoulderheavy responsibilitiesw ith a long w ay to go,and in case ofinappropriate reform ,itis stillpossible thatan unstable situation m ightre em erge.
