Abstract In the initial period after independence,India did not draw much attention of both the United States and the Soviet Union.It was the nonaligned foreign policy that India adopted in the polarized pattern of international situation with a confrontation between the United States and the Soviet Union that has caused the two super powers to turn their attention to and try to win favour of India.India,in such a circumstances,tried and was able to gain advantage from both sides in a long period of the cold war era.She,however,tilted herself to the Soviet side for rarious reasons and,as a result,established a special relationship with the Soviet Union.This article aims at searching for causes why such a special Indo Soviet relationship has come into existene.
