(Abstract)China National Cereal.Oils & Foodstuffs Imp.&Exp. Corp. (COFCO) come to birth in September 1952, at a little alley named Jiaozi Hu Tong in Beijing. At it's early stage, COFCO mainly engaged in oil and food commodities import and export business. COFCO is not only the executor of the state's oil and food commodities import & export plan, but also the administrator of the state's oil and food I/E industry. As the reform of foreign trade system deepens, COFCO become an industrialized, internationalized, and conglomeratized business. COFCO's total amount of I/E has achieved USD 135 billion from 1952 to 1998, makes up 5% of the country's figure in the same period. COFCO's total export amount hits USD 726 billion, And at the same time, it has imported USD 624 billion. COFCO played a key role in the country's oil and food commodities' supply and demand. In 1998, COFCO is the 3rd largest I/E company in China.In 1995, the net asset of COFCO is No. 63 in 500 hundred 'China's Back Bone SOEs', and is the No. 1 company in foreign economic and trade industry. COFCO was one of FORTUNE 500 companies from 1994 to 1998, and stayed in the first 20 in its industry. Up to the end of 1998, total asset of COFCO achieved USD 4.77 billion. COFCO has build up worldwide long-term cooperative relationship with 3,000 clients in 120 countries. COFCO's growing prestige and power gained her the global reputation. COFCO becomes a worldwide brand. This is a story of a company growing in a little alley and finally stage into the global market.At the beginning of 1998, COFCO set 'Reengineering the Business' as the company's new object, It traditional business goal .commmodity import & export, has been finished. A new image characterized by industrialization, internationalization, and conglomeratization will be established. It has begun to execute its 5 essential strategies: Industrialization Strategy, Globalization Strategy, Multi-operating Strategy, Human Resource Developing Strategy, and Brand Strategy.
