五四运动期间，在以往多次反帝爱国运动中发挥过积极作用的上海总商会一反常态地显得十分消极，其态度和行动与广大商人产生了尖锐的矛盾冲突，原有威望及影响也几乎丧失殆尽，由此使上海总商会有史以来第一次在工商界面临严重的信任危机。在五四运动的洗礼和工商界的敦促之下，上海总商会不得不进行大改组，一批具有新思想、新观念的新一代工商界代表人物进入领导层后。

Abstract During May 4 th Movement, Shanghai Chamber of Commerce (SCC), which had played an active role in many anti imperialist struggles, departed from its normal behavior and took a very passive attitude to the Movement. Its attitude and actions incurred much discontent from general businessmen, whose former prestige and influence lost almost to none, so SCC faced its first crisis of trusting since its establishment. Paptized by the Movement and urged by industrial and commercial circles, it had to be reshuffled and a new generation of businessmen with new ideas and new thoughts were elected into the leadership of SCC which began a new historical period.
