This Paper is a detailed study of the pro-verb do. The study shows that the different pro-forms of doexpress different meanings, which, as a result, determine the usage of the pro-forms and the relationship ofsubstitution between the pro-forms and their antecedent verbs. The simple pro-form, which expresses puresubstitution, gives prominence to semantic contrall and has an unlimited scope of substitution. The complex performs, which express pronominal substitution, are used to show semantic identity and have each a limited scope ofsubstitution, the size of which is determined by the force of their pronominal substitution.
