The Semantic Functions and Fundamental Theories of English Adjectives

英语形容词修饰名词时，除了具有传统意义上的描绘功能之外，还有分类和确定的功能。形容词的这三种功能同它们的基本性质以及它们与它们所修饰的名词之间的语义关系有直接关系，而且也决定了它们的并列、插入、位置和等级。本文试从理论上对这些问题进行初步的分析。

In addition to the descriptive function in the traditional sense, the English adjectives have also the roles of classification and identification. The three aspects are related with the nature of the part of speech and the semantic relations between adjectives and the nouns they modify. They determine their position in a sentence, the gradability, and the rule of their insertion and coordination. In this paper, the author tries to make an analysis of these issues from the theoretical point of view with a view to acquiring a rational understanding of the use of adjectives.
