Abstract This article holds that the US policy of supporting European integration since the Second World War has been consistently proclaimed and pursued by every American administration from Truman's to Clinton's.The article centres on analysing the motives for America's support of European integration and argues that such support is mainly driven by US self interest, although Washington has asserted that it is mostly in Europe's interests. The three most important motives were the “double” containment of the Soviet Union and Germany, the pursuit of a more rational and efficient Europe, which could also lighten the heavy burden put upon the United States since 1945,and popularising the American model in Europe. In the American perspective, the integrated Europe was always to be fitted into a wider Atlantic framework, through which the United States would be able to protect its leading role within the Western World.
