The Trend of Russia’s GeopoliticalStrategy Afterthe disintegration ofthe USSR,dra matic changes have taken place in Russia’s geopolitical pattern:geographic strategic space has greatly decreased,its neighboring geopolitical environment has become unstable,nationalsecurity facessevere challenges,itsstatusin world geopolitics hasobviously beenreduced.Undersuch cir cumstances,thetrend ofgeopolitics hasbecome one of Russia’sfocus pointsinitsforeign policy. Inrecentyears,undertheinfluenceofthethreegeopoliticalwavesofAtlanticalism ,nationalism and neo- Eurasiaism ,Russia’sgeopoliticalstrategy hasgraduallytaken shape whichischaracterized by powerfulnationthinking and realism with ”a coretargetandthreestrategic orientations”asitscon tent.Itscoretargetisto preventits constitution system from being harmed by other nationsandto maintainitsstatusasa big powerand asaninfluentialpolarinthe multi-polar world whichisbe ingformed.Onits west,Russiastrivestoreducethethreatcomingfrom NATO’s eastward expan sion tothe minimum andtosetup a new counterbalancedsecuritysystem in Europe.Onthesouth, Russiaseekseveryeffortto contain Islamic extremism and regionalseparatism to safeguardfederal ism ,andatthesametime,ittriestopreventexternalforcestopenetrateintothecentralAsian Cau casianregionin orderto maintain adominantroleintheregion.Ontheeast,Russiaseekstopartic ipatein Asian- Pacific integration process and skillfully handles relations with Asian - Pacific big powersin orderto maintainits big powerstatusin Asia.
