The Balkans: History and Reality

巴尔干是一个众多民族杂居的地区，它们有着迥然不同的历史传统和文化背景。在欧洲分裂的影响下，巴尔干也明显地一分为二：西欧文化区和东欧文化区。斯拉夫人的南下和土耳其人的入侵加深了半岛上的矛盾。巴尔干国家都力求取得在本地区的霸权，彼此间争斗不休。为控制这一战略要地，欧洲诸强也在那里为扩大自己的势力范围而不断进行斗争。所以巴尔干的局势一直动荡不定，成为欧洲的"火药桶"。它的历史也充满悲剧，最近的科索沃危机便是其中之一。

The Balkans are an area inhabited by many nations with completely different historicaltraditions and cultural backgrounds- Under the influence of the splitting of Europe, theBalkans were evidently divided into two parts: Western European cultural zone and EasternEuropean cultural zone. The Slavs moved southward and the invasion of the Balkans by theTurks inevitably intensified the contradictions in the Peninsu1a' The Balkan states wereengaged in the struggle for hegemony in this region and were fighting each otherincessantly. At the same time,every European power was striving to enlarge its own sphereof influence in the Balkans in order to control this important strategic point. So thesituation in the Balkans was turbulent all the time and became a 'Powder Keg' in Europe.The Balkan history is also full of tragedies and the recent Kosovo crisis is only one ofthem.
