On the Historical Existence of “the Marriage System of Cousinship”

“姑舅表婚制”是人类自血缘家庭建立以来，一直普遍存在的一种特殊的婚姻形式。外婚制是其产生的根本原因，“舅权制”则是其存在的内驱力。“姑舅表婚制”有交互姑舅表婚、舅表婚和姑表婚三种基本形式。这种婚姻制度的最主要特点是它的强制性，主要体现在择偶优先权上，尤其是舅家的优先权。“姑舅表婚制”事实上属近亲相婚。

The Marriage System of Cousinship” is a special marriage form, which has universally existed since human beings instituted consanguineous family. The essential reason of the system is the marriage outside family, while the internal cause in mother's brother being in power. “The Marriage System of Cousinship” has three basic forms: mutual marriage between the children of brother and sister, marriage between the children of mother and of her brother and marriage between the children of father and of his sister. The most important character of the system is its compulsory. It can be reflected from the priority of choosing spouse, especially the priority owned by the family of the mother's brother. The system actually is the marriage between closer relatives. Therefore, it inevitably tends to terminate in modern society.
