中国戏剧为何迟至宋代方能形成，原因是多方面的。但是，中国表演艺术自身所走的聚合—分离—融合的发展道路，应该说是主导因素；中国文学和文化对表演艺术发展又起了制约和助推的作用；而这一过程又是政治、经济、哲学、宗教、民族、社会等多种因素综合作用的结果。

Chinese drama took shape as late as the Song Dynasty. The main factor of its late formation resides in the evolution of Chinese stage performance art. Besides, Chinese literature and culture act as both restrictive and driving forces of its development, which is a process influenced by political, economic, philosophical, religious, national, and social factors.
