Liang Qichao′s Viewpoint on Chinese and Western Cultures

在中国与世界、中国文化与西方文化的关系问题上，中国现代思想史上鲜有人具有梁启超那样深刻的世界眼光。其眼光之深刻，不仅大大超过其他戊戌时代人及新文化运动和“五四”时代人，即便按百年后的当代标准看亦如此。梁启超提出的建立一种保留中国文化的本质却不同于原有文化、吸收西方文化精髓却不为所化的新文化主张。

In the matter of the relations between China and the world, between Chinese culture and Western culture, there were very few people who had a cosmopolitan outlook as Liang Qichao had in modern Chinese history of ideology. Liang′s outlook is so deep-going that it not only well transcends the times of the Reform Movement, the new cultural movement and the May Fourth Movement, but it also can be rated as deep-going in the light of the contemporary criterion. Liang′s proposition on China′s new culture characterized by maintenance of Chinese culture′s essence yet different from the original culture and by obsorption of the Western culture′s quintessence withoutbeing assimilated, is particularly of great practical significance to Chinese intellectuals of 1990s.
