Nathainel HaWthorne's novel The Scarlet Letter has already aroused century-long concerns and criticism in the American field of literature due to its easy, smooth and graceful writing, deep-going description of the characters' innermost psychology, ambiguous symbolism, and the dramatic conflicts of moral values. The present paper, as the first of a series of research papers on Hawthorne and The Scarlet Letter, gives a brief review of this novel's history of criticisms. The present author has found that no matter what a method is adopted to interpret the novel, it can give rise to meaningful interpretations, which are surely of great interest. The novel's multi-dimensional interpretation adds mystery and charm to this literary masterpiece.
