The present paper is a tentative inquiry into some of the problems that frequently occur with Chinese users, particularly those problems in indirect as well as direct forms of address in English. It stresses that the function of a form of address is directed more to a living individual and interpersonal relations than to a symbolic or literal surface identification of an individual′s name and identity. Rich in connotation, a form of address varies in meaning when applied in different circumstances. Careful selection of appropriate forms of address is an indispensable prerequisite to successful intercultural communication.
