Abstract Croce's idea that history is a ‘story of liberty’ came from Hegel.In Croce's view,liberty is both the essential driving force of the development of history and the eternal moral thought of human history.This article examines Croce's ideas on such topics as connotation of individual liberty,relationship between liberty and inevitability,and relationship between individual liberty and the course of history,and analyzes his unique views on inevitability and contingency of history.It particularly discusses Croce's remoulding of Hegel's discourse on the ‘Cunning of Reason’,with a comparison between Crose and Collingwood in this respect.It is argued that the remoulding of the quintessence of Hegel's philosophy by these two representatives of the Neo Hegelians is far from being able to provide sufficient explanations for the course of history.
