Abstract Since the end of the Cold War, considerable changes have taken place among China's relations with US, Russia and Japan. These changes resulted in profound impact on China's relations with South Asian countries. Currently, Sino-Russian relations are soundly developing, Sino-US relations tending to be stable and Sino-Japanese relations being reoriented. As a whole, all these changes have provided objective advantages for China to develop its relations with South Asian countries. Nevertheless, some passive elements still existing among Sino-US and Sino-Japanese relations would inevitably generate negative impact on Sino-South Asian relations. The countries concerned should reject the thinking of the Cold War and try their best to expand the common understanding and enhance mutual confidence and cooperation. Under the five principles of peaceful coexistence, they should push ahead the constructively cooperative partnership toward the new century.
