Abstract On December 15-16, Chinese president Jiang Zemin attented the informal summit meetings between the leaders of ASEAN and China, Japan and the ROK(9+3) and between those of ASEAN and Chi na(9+1) in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The informal summits between the leaders of ASEAN-China, Japan and the Rok and ASEAN-China are first top-level meetings ever held in the history of East Asia including China and ASEAN, demonstrating significantly the rise of East Asia and its international status after the end of the Cold War as well as the world's trend toward multi-polarization. The 9+3 and 9+1 summit meetings will certainly bring about the following results: (1)accelerating the development of world multi- polarization so as to promote the establishment of a new international political and economic order; (2)enhancing the unity and cooperation among East Asian nations furthermore; (3) helping promote further development of the relations between ASEAN and China. Given the various difficulties East Asian countries are confronted with in their cooperation, the informal summits have opened up a new page in East Asian cooperation, and the prospects for East Asia in the 21st century are full of brightness.
