Abstract The just-finished quadri-party talks represent the start of the process of the establishment of a peace mechanism for the peninsula. The cause for their sitting together for the talks accounts for their different considerations. On the part of the DPRK, after suffering from severe natural calamity it has appealed to the international community for support and made some flexible approaches, beginning to relax its tense relations with the US and Japan. By depending on its economic strength and diplomatic offensive, the ROK wishes to facilitate the establishment of a multilatral security mechanism, thus pushing forward the development of events toward the direction of the ultimate realization of the unification of the Korean peninsula. The US has adopted a stick-and-carrot policy toward the DPRK so as to move forward the Korean issue to a 'soft landing' in a bid to seek to set up a security and cooperative mechanism on the Korean peninsula with the US as its core. China hopes to gradually diminish the differences through dialogue and consultation by both the DPRK and the ROK in order to explore some avenue to a peaceful solution of the Korean issue at an early date. The quadri-party talks are conducive to the relaxation of the tense situation in the Korean peninsula, and to the acceleration of the economic development for both the DPRK and the ROK, and also beneficial to the peace and development in Northeast Asian region in particular and the whole Asia-Pacific region at large. This will inevitably wield far-reaching influence.
