Abstract At the turn of the century, Russia pursues big power diplomacy and sets its strategic objective of obtaining a favourable position in the coming multipolar world. Its principal approaches are as follows: (1)advocating multipolar world and making active play of its special role as an independent pole in the world; (2) further adjusting the policy toward CIR and consolidating its sphere of influences in the region; (3) deepening the relations with the Asia-Pacific countries and establishing its Eurasian big power status. But there are still major difficuties in realizing above targets, mostly due to the weakening of Russia’s millitary superiority and the heavy hardship in revitalizing its economy at the beginning of next centry. As a result, Russia can make few progress in diplomacy. In the future, Russia will be positioned inferiorly in the multipolar world. However, in taking advantege of its geo-advantege and current millitary ability, Russia could still play an active and stable role in building a fair and reasonable new international political and economic order, and keeping the regional prosperity and development.
