A STUDY OF THE BEIXIN CULTURE

北辛文化的发现与确立,是中国新石器时代考古的重要收获之一。它不仅为大汶口文化找到了渊源,而且将海岱地区的新石器文化整整提前了一个时期,从而为追溯中国东方地区新石器文化的产生和农业的起源迈出了十分重要的一步。一。

The present paper makes an analysis and discussion of the Beixin culture in the lower Huanghe and Huaihe valleys in the following six respects. 1) A brief review of the discovery and study of the Beixin culture. 2) Beginning with the periodization of the type sites Dongjiabai, Dawenkou and Beixin, chosing the ding tripod,bo bowl and small-mouthed double-handled jar,the types greatest in number in the culture,and then dividing them into three periods with five subperiods. Dating the periods according to radiocarbon data. 3) Division of the Beixin culture into the central and southern Shandong, northern Shandong,Jiaodong Peninsula and northern Jiangsu regions as local variants, called Beixin, Yuancheng,Baishicun and Dayishan types respectively. 4) Analysing mainly the difference and similarity between the Baishicun type and the Beixin culture remains in the southern and northern Taishan regions, and coming to the conclusion that the Baishicun type belongs to the Beixin culture. 5) Analysing mainly the Neolithic remains in northern Jiangsu represented by Dayishan ; coming to the conclusion that they belong to the Beixin culture as the similarity between the two is greater than their difference. 6) Discussion of the origin of Beixin culture. A comparative study shows that the culture was developed on the basis of Houli culture and through adoption of numerous elements of the Peiligang culture.
