In November 1988,archaeologists from the Institute of Henan Province and CPAM of Pingdingshan City excavated a Western Zhou tomb(M50)in a graveyard of the Ying King- dom, uncovering a lot of relics,of which a bronze he-vessel is remarkable. The vessel takes the form of a duck, whose head serves as the sproute and whose tail is carved with a ring of figures. It bears exquisite designs, and,on the inside of its lid,an in- scription of forty-three characters in neat strokes. The inscription narrates that the maker of the vessel Pu went to the area of the Di people to visit Duke Xing, and the latter gave him a friendly welcome together with a buckskin showel, two furs and one jun(unit of weight)of bronze. It casts some light upon the ancient practice of visitation and mutual an- nexion between feudal states in the early Western Zhou dynasty. The vessel, according to the authors,is a survival from the period of the King Mu.
