Textual Research on Painted Brick Carvings of Playing Music and Dancing from the Tomb of Fenghui of Late Zhou in Five Dynasties

摘要 The frescos, especially the painted brick carvings of playing music and dancing from Feng Hui’s tomb of Late Zhou of Five Dynasties, are important finds in recent years. Thefrescos display two unusual figures of speaker on opening ceremony. The carvings present general dancers, dancers of Hu style, dancers with Putou () on head and many kinds ofmusical instruments including Konghou, Paibai, Yaogu (waist drum), Pipa with curved neck, Dagu (drum) and some oral instruments such as Sheng , Xiao, etc. The author discusses the textual context on the dancers and musical instruments and corrects some errors of denomination, which appeared in other articles. The discovery ofbrick carvings is of great importance to the study on music of Hu nation and fills the gaps in dancing and musical art between Tang and Song Dynasty.
