AbstractKhatami's election as President of Iran is widely welcomed by the international community. The domestic and foreign policies taken by President Khatami, since he took office, reflect both his pragmatic attitudes and open mindedness, and have enjoyed the support from the people of Iran. President Khatami's efforts to realize his aspirations by implementing his policies, are still to be restrained by various factors, and the road ahead will by no means be smooth. It will take a long time for Iran to free itself from its present diplomatic predicament, and improve, in particular, its relations with its long standing enemy the United States. Hence, in Iran's diplomatic endeavours, President Khatami puts stress on the improvement of its relations with Persian Gulf monarchical states and on the promotion of cooperation within the Islamic world and the region. The success of President Khatami's prepositions and domestic and foreign policies depends on the evolving domestic and external environment. No matter whether President Khatami will resign from the post as his predecessor did, it may be expected that during his tenure of office President Khatami will bring about positive changes in Iran.
