Abstract For two decades since the reform and opening up,China,in accordance with Deng Xiaoping's diplomatic thinking,has resolutely pursued and carried through the peaceful foreign policy of maintaining independence and keeping the initiative,and has actively pushed forward its friendly and co operative relations with the Middle East countries.During the period,situations in the region have been complex and changeful with many events having taken place such as Egypt's making a seperate peace with Israel,Iran's Islamic revolution,the Soviet troops' invasion of Afganistan,the Iran Iraq war,the Israeli invasion of Lebanon,the Gulf crisis and the Gulf War,to say nothing of the twists and turns of the Middle East peace process;nevertheless,the relations between China and the Middle East countries remain unweakened but instead have been incessantly strengthened,making substantial progress both in broadth and depth.At present,China has established diplomatic relations with all the 24 countries of the Middie East,and there are frequent exchange of visits between the high ranking officials of the two sides,with co operation in political,economic,cultural,sports,health and military fields continuously deepening:the Sino Middle East friendly relations have gone up to a new level.
