The concept of plot and plot in postmodernist fiction

摘要 情节这一概念可追溯到2000多年前的亚及斯多德,然而时过境迁,亚民的定义很难甚至不适用于现代派和后现代派的小说情节。理论家试图对情节作进一步的界定,不意闹了个术语困惑。小说家无意做理论上的争辩,但在创作中却表现出三种态度:“亲”、“疏”、“离”,大致分属于现实主义、现代主义和后现代主义小说家。原本旨在“设谜”的情节在后现代主义小说中成了个谜,这个谜留给了读者,要求他用想象来剖解。 The concept of plot oculd be traced to Aristotle , but time has changed , and Aristotle's edfinition of plot is hardly applicable to the 'plots' appearing in modernist and postmodernist fiction. Theorists have tried to define plot again, but in vain and inadvertently fallen in a dilemma. Novelists, regardign the definition as none of their business, show three different attitudes towards conventional plot : 'being for ', 'alienating from' ' and 'being against' - which respectively classify them as realist, modernist or postmodernist. Plot, which was originally intended as a 'riddle ' set by the writer so as to attract the reader ' s attention , is now in postmodernist fiction a 'puzzle 'to the reader which requires his imagination for an interpretation.
