Comparison of information density between Chinese and English based ontextual length

本文以汉英对应文本的篇幅长度为依据比较了汉语和英语的信息密度，讨论了造成汉英对应文本篇幅差异的因素，即词长和各项语言特征的差别。通过大量汉英文本材料的统计分析，发现总体上英语篇幅是汉语的１．７至２．２倍，篇幅差异因文本的不同领域而异。

This paper makes a comparison of information density between Chinese and English on the basis of the length of equivalent texts. The factors underlying the difference in textual length between Chinese and English are length of words and divers linguistic features. Extensive statistics has been conducted for quantative analysis and the basic value of difference between Chinese and English in textual length proves to be approximately from 1.7 to 2.2, varying among different fields, and between texts translated from English into Chinese and those from Chinese into English.
