Many non native English learners have experienced problems with perception of turn bidding which mean that they felt unable to participate adequately in English conversation. The present research studies the phenomenon of turn bidding in a corpus of more than 90 thousand words of English conversation from The London Lund Corpus of Spoken English so as to find:1. How often does turn bidding occur in the corpus? 2. When and where is turn bidding likely to occur? 3. How is turn bidding usually realized? The findings of this study imply that a successful conversation requires its participants to share a common system for signaling or negotiating shifts or transitions from one activity to another, or from one utterance to another. This suggests that efforts need to be made to explore those salient, useful linguistic and pragmatic elements in natural English materials so as to help learners of English to become active listeners and speakers. Moreover, the learners mechanism of anticipation is available not merely for turn bidding in conversation but also for training skills in listening and reading.
