Front weight principle and end weight principle in syntactic structures — A contrastive study on word order in Chinese and English

本文通过对汉语句法结构三个层面———短语层面、单句层面、复句层面———的系统考察，证明在汉语句法结构中存在着一种重量趋前的强趋势，并因此提出现代汉语中左右词序线性排列的结构原则为“前端重量”原则。

Through a systematic survey of the three levels of the syntactic structure in Chinese —— levels of phrase, simple sentence and complex sentence, this paper proves that there is a strong tendency of weight fronting in Chinese syntactic structure and, hence, proposes that the structural principle influencing the linear word ordering in modern Chinese should be the “front weight”principle. By contrast with English, this paper depicts the differences existing in word order of the two languages.
