Abstract The import of the foreign banking capital was closely related to the Chinese politics and economy.Foreign banks had distinctive positions in the Chinese silver market.The administration of Hongkong & Shanghai Banking Corperation,the National City Bank,the Yokohama Specie Bank Ltd.and Banque de L'Indo Chine fully embodied the capital strength of England,U.S.A.,Japan and France in China.These foreign banks,with the protection of exterritoriality,manipulated Chinese import and export business,controlled the China's national exchanges,and almost dominated Chinese banking markets.But foreign banks expansion in China at same time promoted the modernization of Chinese banking system.
