Abstract Many Chinese historians hold that Rousseau's political theory was the cardinal principle of the French Revolution and that the wide spread of his chief work The Social Contract gave an impetus to this great event.In fact,it was quite difficult to find Rousseau's work,The Social Contract in France and few people could understand the obscure words of this book before the Revolution.During the early stages of the Revolution,Rousseau's political theory was only an ordinary one which did not catch much attention of the revolutionary.In 1793,the Jacobinical policies coincided with Rousseau's political theory to some extent,but this was only a temporary phenomenon which was caused by the serious situation.When the political situation became quiet down,Rousseau's theory began to lose its base of existence.
