Abstract The development of the canal transportation in England offers references from varing aspects.Firstly,meeting the formidable challenge from the Industrial Revolution,it improved the inland communication condition in England,broke the development hindering bottleneck of economy,thus smoothed the “take off”process in England.Secondly,it successfully resolved the construction fund problem by raising private funds,through the medium of stocks.Thirdly,the social values of “Trades make a gentleman,to be rich is glorious”accelerated the investment thereby promoted the development of the canal transportation.Lastly,the macro guide policy adopted by the government contributed a lot to the development of the transportation. However,problems turned up during the development.The canal transportation's development in the market competition had already shown its weakness in technical reform and teamwork cooperation which were all symptoms of its later decline.Morever,irrational disposition of transport resources reminds policy makers that government should be in charge of avoiding waste of resources.
