Abstract Statistics is an important tool in the studies of natural sciences,social sciences and humanities.It has also found wide applications in the study of English teaching in recent decades.This paper is designed to explain some of its important concepts,such as frequency distributions,probability distribution,parameters,and estimators,expound the basic principles and contents of its two component parts(descriptive statistics and inferential statistics),and discuss in detail its main applications in the study of English teaching,which include those in the analysis of test results,item analysis,the measurement of reliability and validity,the standardization of tests,and the study of correlational or causal relationships among variables.Instructors of English should be encouraged to venture into the field of statistics and use it as a tool to solve their practical problems.
