An Investigation on Traditional Vizard Masks Made from Bamboo Strips

本文通过竹篼面具与苗族竹王祭、尸位制蚩尤像的种种关联,论证出:竹篼面具产生在远古时期苗族祖魂崇拜的祭祀中,从图腾崇拜中获得通神功能、从尸位祭中取得还魂效应。

Vizard masks made with thin bamboo strips are shown to be related to sacrifices to the Bamboo Kings of the Miao people, the system of the Miao' s ancestral sacrifices and the representation of Chiyou. This paper demonstrates that this kind of vizard came into being from the Miao's sacrificial rites to their ancestors in remote antiquity. The mask gained spiritual power from the totemism and effect of resurrection through the sacrificial rites.
