Mandela′s nationalist ideology has experienced a process of gradual evolution. This process has been closely related with the development of political situations in South Africa and the change of Mandela′s political status. Two major changes occured in his ideology. The first was the change from Africanism of the narrow and exclusive nationalism to the black (including the African, the coloured and the Indian) nationalism; the second was the change from the black nationalism to the South African nationalism accommodating all the South Africans (both black and white). Mandela and his nationalism is today still facing severe test: he must further distinguish and coordinate the interest of the ANC as a party and that of the entire South Africa as a nation, and he must go a step further to prove himself to be not only the leader of the black people, but also the leader of the South African nation; furthermore, he should also strive to help eradicate the racial bias, estrangement and even hostility.
