Abstract Last November, President Mandela solemnly announced that South Africa would sever its“diplomatic ties”with Taiwan and instead establish diplomatic relations with the People′s Republic of China by the end of 1997. The new South African government has made the decision in line with the international established diplomatic norms after seriously weighing advantages and disadvantages in accordance with its state and national interest. It will be difficult to reverse the trend, mainly because of the following reasons:Taiwan′s“diplomatic ties” with South Africa is without any political base, and it is purely out of its own political interest that Taiwan authority has maintained this ties with South Africa through expansion of economic and trade relations, but with no genuine intention to help the new South Africa in its development. Having realized this, the African leaders finally decided to step out of the mistaken zone of ‘dual recognition’. South Africa′s recognition of the PRC is in accord with the diplomatic norms acknowledged by the international community, and it will be conducive for South Africa to play even greater role on the world arena as well as for further development of economic and trade relations between the two countries, and along with it, the question of the future status for South Africa′s representative agency in Hong Kong will also be resolved. The shift of diplomatic recognition by South Africa demonstrates that the conspiracy of Taiwan authority to split the motherland will never succeed.
