AbstractSense of ancestry has occupied a very outstanding position in the Africans' spiritual world. Ancestor worshipping forms the most typical and most impressive content of the black Africans' traditional religion; it reflects, to some extent, the special feature of Africa's social structure, and serves the requirements of various communities for cohesion and identity; therefore, it is beneficial to the formation and consolidation of a common culture and psychology, and contributes to forging unity of tribal groups, thus playing an important role in the long term continuation of the black Africans' traditional society. The stagnation and backwardness of the continent's traditional mode of production and way of life is not unrelated with the traditional culture and psychology characterized by worshipping ancestry and venerating ancestral systems and rules. Thus, the knowledge about ancestor-worshipping in Africa provides an important channel for understanding the black peoples' social, historical, cultural and psychologiacal characteristics.
