Discrimination Between Metonymy and Metaphor

二十年代以来,在大量的辞典、书籍甚至专题修辞论文中,metonymy一直被误译作“借喻”或其他比喻性汉语修辞格。本文第一部份对此进行详细分析,进而确认metonymy的正确译名应为“借代”;而“借喻”的译名应为metaphor。本文第二部份通过实例论述了三篇专题论文中有关上述两个英语修辞格的概念混淆的严重性。

The English 'metonymy' has been wrongly translated into“借喻” or other Chinese figures of a metaphorical nature in a number of dictionaries, books and even monographic papers on rhetoric ever since 1920's. This paper, in the first part,gives the mistake a detailed analysis, which leads to the conclusion that the correct translation of metonymy should be“借代”, while the correct term corresponding to“借喻” is metaphor. The second part of this paper expounds through examples the severity of conceptual confusion between the two as seen in three papers oft rhetoric.
