After the Second World War,owing to the three big issues existingbetween Japan and the Soviet Union, namely, the northern territories, the militarythreat, and the disputes in fishing industry, the relations between the two countrieswere cold and cheerless for a long time. After Mikhail Gorbachev came into office,theJapanese-Soviet relations were somewhat eased. However,as the two sides pursuedifferent aims,no progress has been made in solving the three big issues. The projectionis that there will not be any fundamental improvement in the relations between Japanand the Soviet Union in the near future.
